Background to the SEAG Transfer Test

The New SEAG Single Transfer Test in Northern Ireland

The first Single Transfer Test in Northern Ireland took place in November 2024, overseen by the newly formed Schools' Entrance Assessment Group (SEAG).

Previously, pupils seeking entry to grammar schools in Northern Ireland often sat multiple assessments run separately by the AQE and GL (PPTC). This system sometimes required children to complete up to five different transfer tests. The introduction of SEAG has now replaced this arrangement with one common transfer test, recognised across all grammar schools that use academic selection as part of their admissions process.

Background to the SEAG Transfer Test

Before its introduction, grammar school boards of governors were invited to review a consultation paper entitled “Towards a Single Assessment.” This document outlined the move towards a unified testing system. Following years of collaboration between AQE and GL representatives, agreement was reached on the structure and content of the new SEAG 11 Plus style test.

The SEAG is currently managed by a group of nine grammar school principals. Importantly, the Department of Education in Northern Ireland is not involved in the design or administration of the test. A departmental spokesperson confirmed:

“The Department facilitates the transfer from primary to post-primary school for all pupils, whether or not they sit a transfer test. However, any developments that make the transfer process easier for children and their families should be welcomed.”

Benefits of the SEAG Test

The creation of the SEAG Transfer Test simplifies the post-primary admissions process by ensuring that:

  • Pupils sit one test only, rather than multiple assessments.

  • Results are accepted by all grammar schools in Northern Ireland using academic selection.

  • Parents and pupils face less pressure and duplication in preparing for grammar school entrance.

This new arrangement provides a fairer, more consistent system for children moving from Year 7 (P7) to Year 8 (first form), while retaining the choice for grammar school boards of governors to use academic selection as part of their admissions criteria.
