The school was founded in 1894 following a gift of money from Henry James Campbell who made his fortune in the linen trade. It is a day and boarding school educating boys from ages four to 18. Initially the school was a boarding school but since the 1970s it has more day pupils than boarders. The school has a fee-paying primary section known as Campbell Junior School (formerly called Cabin Hill). The school is situated in a 100-acre estate in east Belfast, close to the Parliament Buildings at Stormont. The school attracts boarders from all over the world. The school admits pupils using the Transfer Test results as one of their criteria.
